Station Monterey
Halloween
Flotilla
06-04 once again supplied Station Monterey with a pumpkin for their
Halloween activities. This
year’s 225 lb monster was engraved at an early stage in the pumpkin’s
life with the Coast Guard logo. As
the pumpkin grew so did the Coast Guard Shield. Special
thanks go to VDCR Division 6 Skip Eckel, Borchard Farms of Castroville,
California and BM1 Russell Howard of Station Monterey for facilitating
this year’s event.

Photo taken by Mike Rafatti of the life
jacket exchange performed at the Bass Pro Shops in Manteca over the the
weekend of May 16th-17th to kick off NSBW. At this HUGE event, 82
life jackets were turned in. In addition to everyone receiving a whistle
for their new life jacket, kids also received a t/shirt and water bottle
from CAL BOATING. Hundreds of people stopped by for boating safety
information. The weekend team consisted of Mike Rafatti FC 10-02, Doug
Lazo FC 10-5, Phil Grove DSO-PV and Mike Lauro DSO-VE (pictured).

Vessel Safety Check Mega Weeks May 16 - July 5
Because of cut backs by State Farm,
our VSC decal sponsor, it was necessary to modify the normal VSC
decal distribution plan and unfortunately, ANSC has been out of
stock for the past few weeks. However, National convinced State
Farm to produce additional decals. They are expected at ANSC the
first week of May.
Please notify your local FSO-MA and
SO-MA that orders can be mailed to ANSC beginning on 27 April.
Priority will go to Flotillas and Divisions who did not
receive their initial order. The attached order form should
be used. It also contains other materials of interest to vessel
examiners.
Hopefully, additional supplies will
be in the field prior to the start of NSBW and VSC Mega Weeks.

Admiral Thad Allen
visits USCG Station Monterey

Admiral Allen greeted by Auxiliary Division 6
Commander Mark McLaughlin
On March 27th, Admiral Thad Allen, the
Commandant for the United States Coast Guard, came to Monterey to deliver
the mid year graduation address at the Naval Postgraduate School. While in
Monterey, he visited USCG Station Monterey where he presented a summary of
his 'State of the Coast Guard' address delivered earlier in the year in
Washington D.C. USCG
Auxiliary Flotilla 06-04 Commander Tony
Budlong and USCG Auxiliary Division 6 Commander Mark McLaughlin were honored
to have an invitation to the meeting from the station CO, Lt. Mike Kahle.
The NLUS Monterey Peninsula Council President John Sanders, and Vice
President Susan McLaughlin also attended.
We learned that the Commandant was tasking
the Coast Guard to no longer do 'more with less', but to "do your best with
what you've got". He talked about the reorganization of the service, and the
Cutter acquisition program currently underway, and answered questions from
the Station. He also discussed the importance of social networking in
today's military and informed the audience he has set up a blog, and a
Facebook account to help communicate more widely with his command and the
public.
